Laurel Smith, CPF, earned the designation of Master Certified Picture Framer (MCPF) during the PPFA 2012 Convention, running concurrently with the West Coast Art & Frame Show in Las Vegas. The 4-hour exam took place Feb. 1 at Art Visions in Las Vegas, owned by Jerry Coughlin.
The MCPF designation is the highest in the association. Laurel, owner of Wild Rose Gallery & Gifts in Cold Lake, Alberta, Canada, joins 61 other framers worldwide who have earned this designation. She is only the third MCPF in Canada.
Laurel presented four framed works: art on paper, art on canvas, textile, and an object. These pieces – each accompanied by a written description, including an explanation of the artwork, handling issues, framing methods, and materials used – were disassembled, inspected, and scored by the examiners, using the established criteria set forth by the Certification Board.
She then had 90 minutes to complete a randomly selected framing project, and to complete a condition report; cut and join a frame; size and cut a double mat; size and cut a back mat and filler; attach artwork; size and cut glass; fit and finish; and complete a framing description form, including methods and techniques used, and the reasons for using them.
Joyce Michels, MCPF, chair of the PPFA Certification Board, organized the exam; Jim Miller, MCPF, GCF, served as an examiner, along with Dennis Duarte, MCPF; Fred Horton, MCPF; and Linda Pujo, MCPF.
