So will your shop be closed for the US holiday this year, any additional day(s)?

Personally, we will be closed the 4th, but open regular hours otherwise (Mon-Sat)

Discuss welcomed. Let's get these boards hopping with conversations :)

Are there certain days of the year in the US when shops have to be closed by law?
In New Zealand shops with the exception of petrol-stations, pharmacies / drugstores and dairies / small grocery-stores have to be closed on Christmas day, Good Friday and the morning of Anzac Day / Rememberance Day. On that last day all shops can re-open at one o 'çlock . Then there are exception for tourist-towns such as Queenstown and Rotorua.

I think the "blue law" (religion inspired) restrictions were overturned in most USA states. We can be open any time we want, in my area.

There was a time in USA when banks, liquor stores, etc could not be open Saturdays and Sundays. Many businesses used to also be closed on Sundays, for this reason, but this is no longer the case. For many years you needed a special license to operate on a Sunday. (before the 1990s)

The rules vary greatly by city and state in USA. For example. food stores are usually open 24 hours per day - but in my area they must close 6 hours per week. (I assume for cleaning?) They usually do this in the early morning on Sunday. (00:00-06:00) Believe it or not, there are still a few areas that have laws on the books entirely banning the sale of liquor or adult oriented goods.

If you want some smiles, check out some of these real laws that are still on the books: http://www.bored.com/crazylaws/ Some of them date back to the early days of USA.

We will be closed for the 4th but we are still up in the air about Tues. and Thurs.
Mike, I'm gonna post that link to Facebook. That's too funny.

I'm planning on closing the beginning of the week through Wednesday the fourth.
I'll be on vacation the entire week, but Amanda is going to open the shop.
We're still not sure about the Saturday before. I left it up to Amanda. If she has something to do, we'll close.

I have been known to close the whole week.

There was a time when the manufacturing plants & many restaurants closed that week for vacation. I haven't noticed any difference in the bottom line when I do, but haven't closed the whole week in a while. We usually follow the lead of the government offices these days since we are downtown. Right now, Wed is the only day on the calendar for this year though.

Make Hay while....

We have noticed that this is almost always a good time to STAY OPEN. When the corporate world has forced or extended vacation (similar to the week before Christmas and New Years) foks start shopping.

When families and friends from out of town visit... folks shop - it's an entertainment thing. And with the 4th smack dab in the middle of the week, we plan on being open every other day - I think Thurs-Saturday might be busy with all those folks taking a 5 day weekend.

4th Schedule

Any chance after the 4th is over Folks get back here and report on how they think it went, being open and being closed, an "after action" report, if you will?

I will try to remember.

In past years when I was open the entire time, it was dead.

That's the key reason I've made it my regular vacation week.

Also, the week after Labor Day.

What with back-to-school, this is a bit of a ghost town then.

I'll be spending 9/4 - 9/11 in San Fran and doing some wine country tours with my wife this year! :-)

4th of July??

We are always close on the 4th and our regular schedule is closed Sunday & Monday unless we have an appointment. This year we a re fudging by closing Tuesay and Wednesday getting a 4 day holiday. Will find out how we did on Thursday because of our answering machine and our customers are not shy about voicing their opinions.
This Saturday has been super busy and I don't know why unless every one wants to be in air conditioning. It is hot and sunny, we figured we would have maybe 2 customers and we had them backed up and laughing. That's FUN.

State of Emergency

As it turns out, we have limited hours this week. The Governor & Feds have declared a state of emergency here as a result of widespread power outages & 100F + temperatures and the associated problems. I have given my employees the week off, but have been coming in for about 6 hrs a day. (I have a few messes of my own to clean up at home).

Oddly, I have done the normal amount of business, though most of it was commercial business. I figure businesses that are open but not offering essential services have extra time on their hands this week and are looking for those things they have been meaning to do.

Reports are that we won't be back to normal until early next week, but with the exception of Wed, I will continue to open as long as we have power here.

Great week....

Let's hope that I don't jinx tomorrow (Friday) and Saturday, because as I predicted it has been busy - Today was one of those record days despite that fact that our phone/credit card machines/Internet was down until almost 4pm.

We had framers, shoppers, gift buyers. Three customers were the children of older customers (nice to see) and the absolutely HORRIBLE hot and humid weather seems to be helping drive people inside to shop.

Les...how was your Thursday after four days off.... curious?

Greg, On Wednesday afternoon at 4pm, I headed to Lowes to pick up some electrical bits... staff at Lowes said they were packed all day long. Although the neighborhood streets seemed quiet, I think with the weather so warm, no one really wanted to be outside.

4 th Off

We went crazy on Thursday until just before closing. No one complained about our being closed, but like every one else it was hot and we had A/C to enjoy out front. The back, work area lost A/C and went to over 80. If it's due to heat they are calling for 102 this Saturday. I'll be able to get a new car, Yeahhh. Did any one else notice a trend?
